Bruce G. Trigger [1937-2006]

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Canadian archaeologist Bruce G. Trigger had one of those careers that made him difficult to summarize in a brief paragraph. Educated at the University of Toronto and Yale University, Trigger's theoretical underpinnings (if a person can have those) were resoundingly Marxist. A prolific writer, he was interested in the history and development of archaeology, and took vociferous stands on the rights of the First Peoples of Canada. His books include a biography of V.G. Childe, and A History of Archaeological Thought.

He is also known for a series of critical essays on archaeological thought:
  • 1998 Archaeology and epistemology: Dialoguing across the Darwinian chasm. American Journal of Archaeology 1021-34.
  • 1995 Expanding middle-range theory. Antiquity 69:449-458.
  • 1991 Early native North American responses to European contact: Romantic versus realistic interpretations. Journal of American History 77(4):1195-1215.
  • 1991 Constraint and freedom - A new synthesis for archeological explanation. American Anthropologist 93(3):551-569.
  • 1967. Settlement archaelogy: Its goals and promise. American Antiquity 32:149-160
