Definition: American artist and statistician Edward R. Tufte wrote a book called "the Visual Display of Quantitative Information", published in 1983, that had an enormous impact on archaeology, at least on the practioners of statistics in archaeology. He argued for meaningful statistics and, even more importantly, meaningful use of charts and graphs. Well, in a perfect world he would have had an enormous impact. Currently professor emeritus at Yale, Tufte is creating art and apparently working on a new book with the intriguing name "Beautiful Evidence".
