By , About.com Guide

Definition: German archaeologist and linguist Max Uhle is often said to be the father of Andean archaeology. He conducted important work in Bolivia and Peru, Chile and Ecuador, at sites such as San Pedro de Atacama and Chinchorro in Chile and Pachacamac in Peru. Although much of his work has yet to be written up, records and artifacts of his investigations may be found throughout the world. Educated at the universities at Gottingen and Leipzig in linguistics, Uhle became interested in archaeology while acting as assistant to the director of first the Dresden Museum and then Konigslisches Museum fur Volkerkunde in Berlin under Adolph Bastian. Uhle's first travels to South America were in 1888.
