By , About.com Guide

Definition: American archaeologist and anthropologist Evon Z. Vogt, Jr. is probably best known for his ethnographic work at Zinacantan in Chiapas state, Mexico. Educated at the University of Chicago, Vogt's dissertation research was on the Navajo code talkers, whom he had met and admired during World War II. After securing a job at Harvard University, Vogt focused on Mesoamerica, selecting the Mayan community of Zinacantan for study, and developing a deep contextual study on the Tzotzil people who lived there. Vogt is also associated with the development of aerial photography as a research tool.
