Definition: Ernest Volk was a German-born archaeologist hired by F.W. Putnam of the Peabody Institute at Harvard to keep an eye on a gravel pit in Trenton New Jersey while they were being mined during the late 19th century. In 1899, he saw a human burial, and with Charles C. Abbott began the explorations of the Trenton Gravels, considered to be a possible location for proof of great antiquity of humans in the New World. An avid collector and amateur scientist, Volk published The Archaeology of the Delaware Valley in 1911.
