By , About.com Guide

Definition: American archaeologist Antonio Waring Jr. is probably most closely associated with the development of the trait list for the "Southern Cult", which he accomplished with Preston Holder. Educated at Yale, and connected with the Peabody Museum throughout his professional career, Waring was also part of the archaeological crews of the Works Progress Administration of the Great Depression during the 1930s. He excavated several of the most important sites in the American southeast, including the Refuge site (South Carolina), and the Irene Mound, Deptford and Bilbo sites in coastal Georgia.
