Definition: Charles Warren was an English archaeologist who is undoubtedly famous (or infamous, I suppose), for having conducted clandestine excavations in Jerusalem, by tunneling under the Temple Mount, unthinkable today. Educated at Cheltenham and Sandhurst, Warren was a member of the Palestine Exploration Fund and conducted surveys of central Jordan and the Plain of Philistia. He also worked in South Africa, as an archaeologist, policeman, and military leader of the South African Field Force.
