Patty Jo Watson [born 1932]

By , About.com Guide

Definition: American archaeologist Patty Jo Watson is a true pioneer in 20th century archaeology. Trained at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute under Robert Braidwood, Watson began her career as a Near Eastern archaeologist, but became interested in cave sites of Kentucky by the 1960s. Watson is an ethnoarchaeologist and a processualist, and sees ethnographic analogy as a hypothesis to be tested, rather than taken whole cloth. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1988, Watson was Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor of Archaeology at Washington University in Saint Louis until she retired in 2004.
