Definition: British medical doctor Calvin Wells is considered by some the father of paleopathology. Trained both as a doctor and an anthropologist at the University College London, Wells began combining his interests after World War II, using archaeological human remains to begin to identify the history and expression of diseases such as leprosy in skeletal material. He also did a great deal to popularize the methodology, publishing his text Bones, Bodies and Disease in 1964.
