Definition: Richard Wetherill was the best known of a family of cowboy ranchers and explorers who lived in the Four Corners area of the American southwest during the late 19th century. Although none of them were archaeologists, the Wetherills (led by patriarch Benjamin) explored Mesa Verde and other abandoned Anasazi pueblos, bringing them to the attention of archaeologists such as A.V. Kidder. Richard Wetherill in particular explored Cliff Palace and gave the name "Basketmaker" to preceramic occupations in the area. Richard was said by Willa Cather to have been the model for her character Tom Outland in the Professor's House.
