Definition: Sir Mortimer Wheeler had to have been among the most influential public archaeologists of the middle twentieth century, as a result of his three popular television series on archaeology. Educated at the University of London, Wheeler's academic career included stints at the National Museum of Wales, the London Museum and the British Academy; he and his wife founded the London Institute of Archaeology. He had a distinguished military career during both World War I and II. Wheeler excavated extensively in Pakistan and India, and is also associated with the British sites of Verulamium and Maiden Castle.
