Definition: Joseph Whemple is the name of the fictional archaeologist in the 1932 movie The Mummy, played by Arthur Byron, whose next role was as a warden in the movie 20,000 Years in Sing Sing. Whemple was the archaeologist who dug up the poor old fellow named Imhotep (not the architect of the same name) and set him loose on the world.
