Franz Wickhoff [1853-1909]

Definition: Austrian art historian Franz Wickhoff made archaeology news when he published books and articles pointing out the importance and originality of Roman art, which prior to that time had been considered a decadent copy of the Greeks. Educated at the University of Vienna, Wickhoff was the curator of the Österreichischen Museum für Kunst und Industrie, and a member of the Viennese School of History of Art, along with Alois Riegl and Max Dvorák.
