By , About.com Guide

Definition: 18th century German archaeologist and art historian Johann-Joachim Winckelmann is best known among archaeologists for his support of the preservation of Pompeii, as it was being looted (um, excavated) by archaeologists of the day. A self-taught art historian, Winckelmann gained access to the great art collections of the day, including those owned by the Vatican, and the Borghesi and Medici families of Italy.
