Small Museum Shops

Small museums are an excellent place to find authentic reproductions; money spent in the shop usually goes to support the museum collections, and the goods are often produced by local artisans.

Abbe Museum

Located in Bar Harbor, Maine, the Abbe Museum is dedicated to information about the Native American communities in Maine, including the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot, specializing in Native American-made baskets. In addition to baskets, the Abbe has educational resources, children's books, and publications related to Wabanaki culture and history; Abbe logo shirts, balsam, and magnets. Prices and complete catalog are not available online (the baskets are one of a kind), but you can call and get that information. Phone and fax orders only.

The Suq: Oriental Institute of Chicago

The Oriental Institute in Chicago was founded in 1919 by James Breasted as a research center for the study of the ancient Near East. Their online store, called the Suq, has a large selection of books of all kinds, as well as jewelry and games of an ancient themes. Secure online ordering available, also phone, fax and email.

The University of Pennsylvania Museum

Founded in 1887, the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has collections from all over the world. The online shop has numerous items illustrated and can be purchased online, including including reproductions of Sumerian and Mesopotamian clay tablets, jewelry, books and stationary, clothing, and a speciality shop for kids. The Bishop Museum

The Bishop Museum, in Honolulu, Hawai'i, was established in 1889 to house the royal collections of the Kamehameha family. The museum store has books, clothing, collectibles, housewares; shop online or by phone, fax or mail.

The Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum in New York City was dedicated in 1904 by Frieda Schiff Warburg to the Jewish cultural history of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Cooper Shop has reproductions and adaptations of artifacts from the 18th and 19th century, for Passover and Hannakuh items, mezuzah cases, and jewelry, as well as books and a children's store. Historic Alexandria Museum

Kilmartin House

The Kilmartin House museum shop in Argyll, Scotland has a range of arts and crafts, books and music specializing in celtic history, but, sadly, not online yet. Email or phone for information.

Frank H. McClung Museum

McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee has books listed on line, and sells a range of "Cherokee Indian baskets, fossils, rocks and minerals, games, items pertaining to ancient Egypt, regional crafts, and an array of items pertaining to current exhibitions" in their bricks and mortar store, but none of that online. The Field Museum

The Field Museum in Chicago has the usual stuff like books, t-shirts and stationary, and also one-of-a-kind reproductions of jewelry, basketry, pottery and sculpture. Online shopping.
