The Silk Road was a complicated web of trails and tracks which connected the civilizations of the far east with those of Europe. It is believed to have been most influenced by the Han dynasty (206-BC-220 AD) rulers based in Chang 'An, who sent out explorers to the west to Rome, to the south to Oc Eo and southern India, to enable the trade of silk, precious gems, food and ideas.
