Afar Triangle (Ethiopia)

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: The Afar Triangle is the name given to the region of Ethiopia, Africa, known for the identification of very old hominid remains, especially the Australopithecus afarensis, such as the fossil known as Lucy; and some of the oldest known human remains at Omo Kibish.

Two regions in Afar known as culturally rich are the Hadar and Middle Awash regions. According to the most recent paleontological research, the Afar region may be the original point of evolution for Homo sapiens and many of our ancestor.
