Definition: The Algonquin was a proto-historic and historic cultural group of the eastern North American continent at the time of the first European settlement.
The Native American group probably were originally located in the Canadian subarctic and Great Lakes region; but after the European invasion, Algonquin groups moved westward, some eventually ending up as far away from their homelands as Northern California. American ethnologist Henry Schoolcraft studied the Algonquin people in the nineteenth century.
