Aqaba (Jordan)

Definition: The site of Aqaba is a medieval Islamic town in Jordan originally called Ayla; the occupations there date from the Chalcolithic through Roman times. Ayla was a capital city of the early Islamic period from AD 650 to the arrival of the Crusaders in 1116 AD, a period of about 450 years. Recent excavations at Aqaba have been undertaken by Donald Whitcomb of the Oriental Institute.
