Archaeoastronomy

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Archaeoastronomy is the the study of ancient methods and reasons for studying the stars and planets, including but not limited to tracking the solar and lunar years. Ancient observatories and rock art are often the focus of this study. People who make careers in this field often specialize in both physics and archaeology, a difficult course of study indeed. Interestingly, archaeoastronomy also attracts numerous amateurs who may contribute to the science, or simply muddy the waters.
