Arikamedu (India)

Definition: Arikamedu was a Roman trade center on the southeast coast of India, near the modern town of Pondicherry. First occupied well before the Romans in the 2nd century BC, Arikamedu was the capital of the Mauryan empire in the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. The town is best known for its stone bead production. Excavations at Arikamedu were conducted by Vimala Begley and Peter Francis Jr. in the late 20th century.
