Death by Theory

About.com Rating four out of Five

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Adrian Praetzellis. 2001. Death by Theory. Altamira Press, Walnut Creek, California. 153 pp, glossary, bibliography.
There's always one "killer course" in graduate school, no matter where you choose to get your degree. For many, the class which is do-or-die, which is used to weed out the non-serious student, which is a tough, tough, tough course, is Archaeological Theory. Thank god for Adrian Praetzellis who has given beginning archaeological students an entertaining way to pick up the basics.

Death by Theory takes our heros, archaeologist Dr. Hannah Green and her nephew Sean Doyle, on a mission to a Pacific Northwest island, where an eccentric wealthy fellow has found an archaeological site with some very strange characteristics. While Hannah and Sean solve the mystery, they also delve into the mysteries of Binford and Hodder and Marx (oh my!).

The book is liberally illustrated with humorous drawings by author Praetzellis, whose day job is as associate professor at Sonoma State University. It is a hoot, and sure to make a really difficult course somewhat easier to chart.
