Definition: Bashidang is an early walled rice farming settlement belonging to the Pengtoushan culture, dated between 5540 and 5100 BC near Wufu village in the Yangtse River basin, Hunan province in China. Excavated by the Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology in the 1990s, Bashidang contains a village of about 200x160 meters surrounded by an earthen wall. Structures in the village are of three types, include semi-subterranean and above ground residences, and buildings on platforms with central illars and ramps of unknown use.
