Mosaic at Beth Alpha Synagogue

Definition:

The site of Beth Alpha (or Beit Alpha) in Israel is believed to be an ancient Jewish synagogue. The structure was built by either Justin I (518-527 AD) or Justin II (567-578) during the Byzantine empire.

The walls and floors of Beth Alpha were covered with mosaics typical of the period and illustrating Hebrew legends and including a Zodiac panel, shown in the illustration. The architectural format mirrors contemporary Christian churches.
