Bin Bir Kilisse (Turkey)

Definition: The site of Bin Bir Kilisse, also called Maden Sheher, was a Byzantine city, described by British archaeologist Gertrude Bell as the "City of a Thousand and One Churches". Her photographs of the ruins, taken during the first decade of the 20th century, are a permanent record of the churches, which have since been destroyed. Maden Sheher was excavated by Marcel Restle in the 1960s.
