Definition: Byzantium is the name of the state, culture and capital city of the eastern Roman empire, which outlived the Roman empire, from Roman times through the 15th century AD. Byzantium itself, located in what is now Turkey, had its heyday from the 4th through 7th century AD; the capital city of Constantine the Great called Constantinople was founded in 330 AD.
