Aquileia was an important town of the Roman empire with 200,000 citizens at its height. The first basilica of Aquileia was built in the 3rd century AD and destroyed with most of the city by Attila the Hun in 452 AD. In 1031, the basilica was rebuilt on the ruins of the previous one. The extant structure today shows extensive remodeling, with intact structural pieces between the 11th and 17th centuries, and intact mosaics dated from the 4th century.
