The Ottoman capital city of Edirne in far western Turkey, was founded as Orestias by the ancient Greeks, and conquered and renamed by the Roman emperor Hadrian in the first century AD. After a long and varied career, including being conquered by Constantine in 328 AD, the city was captured by Sultan Murat I in 1360/2 and served as the capital of the Ottoman empire between 1365 and 1453.
Edirne is known for its beautiful mosques, including the Selimiye illustrated here. The Selimiye mosque was built in 1575 by Mimar Sinan, one of the most famous architects of the Ottoman empire. And justly so, as you can see from the image on this page.
