The city of Tirana, Albania has a long checkered history. Officially founded in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha, the region was first settled as least as early as Neolithic times. In 520 AD, the emperor Justinian built the Petrela Castle; it was rebuilt in the 18th century by the Ottoman ruler Ahmed Pasha Toptani.
This pretty mosque in Tirana was built between 1794 and 1821. It was closed under communist rule and then reopened in 1991.
