Glossary

Definition: The term ceramics or pottery refers to artifacts made of heated earth, including storage and cooking vessels, building material such as adobe brick, and occasionally tools and furniture. Fired earth vessels were first invented around 12,000 years ago by the Jomon culture in Japan, in Asia by about 7000 years ago, and again around 5000 years ago in Mesoamerica.
