Cairo (Egypt)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The Islamic city of Cairo is, oddly enough, one of the newer cities in Egypt, founded in the 7th century AD as a military outpost. In the 10th century, Cairo was made the capital of the Fatimid dynasty, led by Al-Muez Ledin-Ellah and his general Gawhar. Cairo (al-Qahirah in Arabic) means "Triumphant City" in Arabic, and the Fatimids were an incursion against the prevailing Abbasid Dynasty. Extensive additions to the city were made by the Seljuk leader Saladin in the 12th century; and the city blossomed under the Mamluks between 1250-1517.
