Gertrude Caton-Thompson [1899-1985]

By , About.com Guide

Definition: English archaeologist Gertrude Caton-Thompson was one of Flinders-Petrie's students at the University College at London. She worked at Abydos and Oxyrhynchus and other sites in the middle east, as well as Egypt and southern Africa.

With Elinor W. Gardner, Caton-Thompson also conducted a comprehensive survey of the El Fayum area of Egypt, and during the late 1920s conducted important work at the Great Zimbabwe site, which she proved conclusively was of African origin.
