Definition: The Chaoxian cave is an early hominin site located in eastern Anhui province, China. In the 1980s, pieces of a skull which appear to be transitional between Homo erectus and early modern Homo sapiens were recovered and found to date to the late Middle Pleistocene, between about 200,000 and 250,000 years before the present. This interpretation tends to support the multiregional hypothesis, so the site is somewhat controversial.
