Definition: The Chorrera culture is the name given to the Late Formative period in Ecuador's Andes and coastal areas, between about 1000-300 BC. They were noted for their hollow ceramic figurines, in the shapes of animals and plants. Archaeologists associated with Chorrera culture include Emilio Estrada, Clifford Evans and Betty Meggers. Chorrera has been considered part of the debate concerning the possible cross-Pacific cultural transmission of the earlier Formative Valdivia and Machallila cultures.
