Culture

By , About.com Guide

Definition: To anthropologists (and many archaeologists), culture refers to the way of life of a group of people, including how they live, what they wear, how they govern themselves, how they deal with the dead, their religious beliefs, etc. Also, rather more loosely, archaeologists use the term as a collective term for a geographically-bounded set of artifacts and material evidence for similar types of behavior, e.g., the Corded Ware culture, etc.

This glossary entry is part of the Dictionary of Archaeology. Sources for the term include the references listed on the front page of the Dictionary, and the websites listed in the sidebar. Any mistakes are the responsibility of Kris Hirst.
