Blogs, Podcasts & VideosArchaeology news sources have blossomed in the past few years. In 2000, I listened to a Society for American Archaeology panel discussion on archaeology news, where five science writers told us that they had too many other things to write about, and they would not cover archaeology news unless it reported the oldest or sexiest archaeology. At the time, it seemed like very bad news indeed. But today, the amazing number of blogs, newsletters, and news outlets, combined with the access to news readers searchable on keywords, have made information (and other niche reporting) accessible beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Now the problem is finding a way to handle all the information!
Here's a collection of some of the best ways to keep abreast of archaeology news, including weblogs, newsletters, and rss feeds. Amalgamated Friday (32)

Top Archaeology News Stories for 2005
From the identification of a new species of human to the cracking of the Inca writing system, 2005 has been one exciting year in archaeology. American Archaeology
From the Archaeological Conservancy, a magazine devoted to the archaeology of the United States, Canada and Latin America; and a great source of archaeology news. All the News that Isn't
The mainstream press isn't really interested in archaeology news, unless a site is the earliest or in the way of some development project. You can still find out about what's going on in the archaeological world. Here's how. Archaeology Blogs
The hottest new archaeological news source is weblogs, and with blog readers becoming simpler to set up, this may be the cheapest and fastest way to get the latest. Archaeology Magazine
Now celebrating its fiftieth year of publication, Archaeology magazine publishes six times a year; and for my money, the best and most accurate source of archaeology news. Archaeology Magazines
Print magazines for the public (cuch as Archaeology magazine, Current Archaeology, or Minerva) are a great source of archaeology news. Archaeology News Groups
An archaeology news discussion list is, basically, an email exchange. A group of people who have an interest in a specific topic, sign up to chat with each other via email. Like other sources of archaeology news, discussion lists have their pros and cons. Archaeology Newsletters
Archaeology newsletters comes in your email inbox on a regular basis, whether once a day or once a week, or even occasionally. Archaeology Podcasting
Podcasting is the latest craze on the Internet, and there are a few, and probably soon to be more, examples of archaeology podcasting available today Covering Archaeology News Stories
Let’s face it: the mainstream press simply doesn’t do a good job reporting archaeology news. But getting accurate news about archaeology is easy if you know where to look. Current Archaeology
Britain's leading archaeology magazine; and a great source of archaeology news for the United Kingdom. Stone Pages Pod-Cast
It was bound to happen; a weekly archaeology podcast, from Stone Pages and the British Archaeological Jobs Resource, updated Mondays or Tuesdays. An excellent way to get your archaeology news and still multi-task. StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon is a great way to accidentally find a new website, and also a good way to get a little entertainment from the web. You sign up for a free account, select your area of interest (archaeology, of course!) and StumbleUpon installs a toolbar in your browser, which you use to find random recommended webpages in your interest. The Archaeology Channel
An inventive site by the Archaeological Legacy Institute takes public archaeology and the internet to to a new creative place. TAC is a good source of archaeology news, although the videos can cover only a few of the breaking news stories in a given period. |
