Documentary Films in Archaeology - Resources

Each year, documentary films are produced on archaeological sites and topics around the world. Here's a listing of societies for archaeology film producers, film festivals, university programs and other resources on film-making in archaeology.

Atlantic Productions
Produces films such as 'King Tut's Mystery Tomb Opened' (for Discovery channel), and 'Herod' for National Geographic.

Boundary Productions
Boundary Productions is an Austrian company that produces mainly German and English history and archaeology videos on DVD, including several in English on Roman Frontiers. Site is in English and German.

CINARCHEA
CINARCHEA is a bi-annual International Film Festival for documentary films in archaeology, presented every other year at different venues throughout Europe, and always including a symposium on different topics. The site includes clips from the award winners. German and English.

European Federation of Film Festivals on Archaeology (FEDARCINE)
The website of FEDARCINE (the European Federation of Film Festivals on Archaeology and Cultural Heritage) is a clearing house for information about upcoming film festivals from several societies throughout Europe. German, English, and French.

Festival du Film d'Archéologie
A biannual (odd years) international film festival located in Nyon, Switzerland. French, German, and English.

Granada Media
Granada is a very successful company in the UK who have produced such historical programs as "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" and "Battlefield Detectives."

ICRONOS
Icronos, (Association du Festival International du Film Archéologique) is a biannual (even years) film festival held in Bordeaux, France. French.

KINEON
Biannual (odd years) archaeology film festival, held in Belgium.

Lion Television
Productions by Lion have included such things as Castle, which explored the history and architecture of medieval castles; and Guns, Germs, and Steel (currently in production).

MA in Archaeology for Screen Media
The University of Bristol's Archaeology Department began teaching an MA in screen media in 2001.

Smithsonian's Deal with Showtime
By no means not uncontroversial, in 2005 Showtime entered into a deal with the Smithsonian Institution to produce archaeological and ethnographic documentaries.

The Archaeology Channel
The Archaeology Channel provides a place for short films of archaeological interest, as webcasts, and holds an annual film festival. English.

Tiger Aspect Productions
Tiger Aspect has produced programmes such as Armand Marie Leroi's 'What Makes Us Human' and 'How the Romans Ran Europe' with Boris Johnson.
