Da But (Vietnam)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The archaeological site called Da But is an early Neolithic cemetery and shell midden in coastal region of Thanh Hoa province of Vietnam, recently radiocarbon dated to 5085 BC. Da But was excavated in the 1930s by Étienne Patte. The subsistence method of the people living at Da But appears to be a mixed hunting, gathering, and fishing. There is some evidence for animal husbandry and paddy rice cultivation, but scholars are divided about whether Da But represents a true 'Neolithic' lifestyle. Eventually, Da But evolved into the clearly Neolithic Quynh Van culture.
