Dara (Egypt)

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Dara is the name of a site in central Egypt near the modern town of Asyut and outside the Dahklah Oasis. At this site a pyramid was built by a local leader named Khui in the 10th Dynasty, First Intermediate Period (2175-2035 BC). Scholars are divided as to whether the structure investigated by French Egyptologist Raymond Weill in the 1940s actually counts as a pyramid, however, partly because it was built from limestone blocks taken from an earlier structure.
