Definition: Deer Lake Beach is a multicomponent Beaches, Little Passage, Beothuk and Recent Indian site, located on an inlet in Newfoundland with access to the Atlantic coastland. Excavated by David Reader in the 1990s, Deer Lake Beach's earliest component (called Beaches and dated approximately AD 400) contains at least two large communal buildings with middens and an emphasis on beaver and caribou hunting. The Beothuk period (AD 1500 to 1829) also has evidence of a communal building. Reader believes that this consistent pattern of site use suggests evidence of social cohesion over 1500 years of time.
