Definition: Andrew Ellicott Douglass was an American astronomer, who with archaeologist Clark Wissler, invented the dating methodology known as dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating. His career is something we should all ponder; fired as an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, Douglass took up teaching in the Flagstaff, Arizona area where he got interested in tree rings. Eventually, he ended up teaching at the University of Arizona at Tucson, where he met Wissler... and that's how it all got started.
