Egolzwil (Switzerland)

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Egolzwil is an Alpine Neolithic (late 5th millennium BC) lake dwelling site in Canton Lucerne, Switzerland on the shores of Lake Wauwil. Like many of the Alpine lake dwelling sites, the archaeological site had fabulous preservation, with the excavations revealing several rectangular timber houses, floored by logs covered with bark and heated with clay platform hearths. The inhabitants made round-based pottery, domesticated cereals, sheep and goats, and gathered plants and hunted animals. The houses probably sheltered both humans and animals in separate rooms.
