Definition: Epidauros is the name of a small city and Greek sanctuary dedicated to Asklepios located on an Mediterranean Sea inlet. The first occupation was a shrine to Apollo, beginning about the 7th century BC, and a shrine to Asklepios was dedicated by about 500 BC. Beginning about 370 BC, the shrine became a temple complex, with a stadium, gymnasium, banqueting hall, hostel, baths, altars and fountains, and the largest theatre in classical Greece. Archaeologists connected with Epidauros include P. Kavvadias and R.A. Tomlinson.
