Evolution

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Evolution is the study of change. In its most basic sense, evolution is the scientific theory that all animals and plants have their beginnings in preexisting types. The word 'theory' is where so many people get caught up. All scientific evidence indicates that life changes over time; that's pretty much a given, now is it? Evolution is also used in archaeology as "the evolution of culture," to describe the changes of culture over time.

This glossary entry is part of the Dictionary of Archaeology. Sources for the term include the references listed on the front page of the Dictionary, and the websites listed in the sidebar. Any mistakes are the responsibility of Kris Hirst.
