Ode to the Skim Shovel

A Poem by Tim Meade and John Peterson

Shovels--both round and flat-ended--are as necessary to much field work as a trowel.

Shovels--both round and flat-ended

Ode to the Skim Shovel is an archaeology field song, contributed by two former denizens of the shovel, Tim Meade and John Peterson

Ode to the Skim Shovel

Skimming and skimming with this creaky old shovel...
Dreaming of making enough to afford a little hovel
But, alas, on my knees I will grovel...
So maybe I need a better job then pushing this dirty ole shovel...

My hands are calloused, the blisters hurt awful
Oh these long hours behind the ole skimming shovel
My knees are sore, my back is bent... I sure do hobble
$7.50 per hour... Do I get a raise?... Nah, I never will

The trowel does not capture my glow;
It moves the dirt way too slow.
The round tip shovel gouges too deep,
A nice smooth floor I cannot keep.

At a meager $7.50 an hour,
I will not work past the hour.
Thus the skim shovel is my friend.
As long as I keenly sharpen one end.
