Definition: The term fiction, in archaeology and elsewhere, refers to a piece of literature or other creative work that's wholly invented by the author. Archaeology is frequently a topic used by fiction writers, and several archaeologists have tried their hands at fiction, such as Michael and Kathleen Gear, Elizabeth Peters and Gordon R. Willey.

This glossary entry is part of the Dictionary of Archaeology. Sources for the term include the references listed on the front page of the Dictionary, and the websites listed in the sidebar. Any mistakes are the responsibility of Kris Hirst.
