The Application Package Arrives

When the package containing the application material you need to fill out to apply to your graduate school of choice comes to your door, take some time to go through everything it contains. There is a lot of information to wade through so you might want to draw up a list summarizing the important points (deadlines, documents needed, scholarship and funding information, research areas, programme information) for each university. This will help you compare programmes later on.

When you have read through everything once, read it through again to make sure that you have not missed anything.

All the information you need should be contained in the packages you have received; but if you are unsure of something, call the department for clarification. The person to contact should be listed somewhere in the package. If not, ask for the graduate secretary.

Once you have gathered all the information you can get, it is time to think about filling out the forms.

Most schools have a deadline of around the end of January or beginning of February. It is to your advantage to get the application materials to the schools of your choice well before these deadlines.

Pay Attention to Deadlines

Be aware of other deadlines that may have an effect on your application. For example, if you are applying to schools in the USA or to McGill University, you will need to take the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE); the timing of this is critical. In many instances the same letters of reference will be used for applications and scholarships--and the deadlines are not always the same--use the earliest deadline!

Most schools require one completed application form, three letters of reference, a statement of intent, a curriculum vitae (or résumé) and an example of written work.

Make sure that your name is on each and every piece of paper you submit. In spite of our best efforts, pieces of paper can be mislaid and if there is a name we can easily return it to the right file. And please staple all pages of one item together--for example a 3 page c.v. should be stapled together, your written work should be stapled together.

Let's take each item separately.
