What About My Transcript?

Chances are excellent that your graduate school application will require official transcripts from each secondary institution you have attended; and usually two copies are requested. Be sure to request these well before the deadline as some universities take a long time to issue them. If you took any courses at another university, please get a transcript, even if you had the credits transferred.

While talking about transcripts, a word about the grade point average (GPA). The minimum admission GPA to graduate school seems to be 3.3 across Canada. Now you may be a student who has a GPA of 3.1 as you go into your fourth year. You have decided that you really want to go to grad school and you are determined to work hard and get A’s in your final year. Unfortunately, as the deadlines are the end of January, the transcript will not show this improvement. We can only work with the information we have--not what you hope will be the end result. If you are in this situation you are well advised to wait until you have finished that crucial fourth year so that you can submit a transcript with your all-important final year showing a GPA of 4.0.

By the way, read the fine print of application materials carefully. Some universities (Calgary being one of them) charge an additional year’s fee if you have only a 3 year degree.
