Archaeological sites and cultural history resources for the modern country of Iceland.

Hrisbru - Viking Age Chiefly Residence of Hrisbru

Hrísbrú is the name of a Viking period farmstead, located in the Mosfell valley of Iceland a few kilometers from Reykjavik. The site includes a traditional Viking Age longhouse dated ~790-1100 AD, a church and associated cemetery (ca 1000 AD), and pagan cremation site.

Hofstaðir (Iceland)

Hofstaðir was a Viking settlement located in northeastern Iceland, where archaeological and oral history reports a pagan temple was located. Recent excavations suggest instead that Hofstaðir was primarily a chief's settlement, with a large hall used for ritual feasting and events. Radiocarbon dates on animal bone range between 1030-1170 RCYBP.
