Archaeological Sites of the Inca

  • Cusco (Peru) was the capital city and political core of the Inca empire, founded by Manco Capac sometime in the 13th century AD.
  • Pachacamac (Peru), was a major religious center beginning in the first century AD, but eventually came under the Huari and Inca states.
  • Llullaillaco (Argentina) is an Incan burial site on the summit of Mt. Llullaillaco, and at 6739 meters above sea level it is the highest archaeological site known in the world.
  • Chan Chan was a capital of the Chimú kingdom before it was conquered by the Inca.
  • Machu Picchu was a palatial residence built by the Inka capac Pachacuti in the 15th century AD.
